MID-TERM IN MIDDLE-EARTH

The mid-term election polls may be closed in the USA; but, in Middle-earth, election-fever is still running high - including (if Russell Arch and YouTube are to be believed) some pretty strong TV electioneering!

TIME FOR CHANGE!

It would be interesting now to see any commercials from Legolas' Green Party whose campaign has consistently drawn attention to the fact that Frodo Baggins was almost single-handedly responsible for the eruption of Mount Doom with the consequential dire effects on global warming...

I wonder what JRRT would have made of that! I can't help but think that he would have been absolutely horrified... like me! What will those people think of next!

It is, as I'm sure Suzanne realises, a satire not on 'The Lord of the Rings' but on current American politics and the deplorable use of negative TV advertising which have been such a regrettable feature of the recent election campaign...

It is a testimony to the extent to which Tolkien's book (and the Jackson films) have entered world-wide consciousness that such a satire finds its mark...

The author would, I suspect, be "absolutely horrified" at much that has been done based upon his books --- just as he would be suitably horrified by many aspects of the world in which we now live - such as most (if not all) of international politics...

Personally, I can't help wondering, were he writing today, how the horrors and terrors of OUR age would have influenced and impacted on the way in which he recounted his epic of the Third Age...

That is absolutely true...
