THE LOVE TRADE

Lest you were wondering – but I'm sure you weren't – here is the TRUE meaning behind why we celebrate the Feast of St Valentine...

And in case you are among the many millions of Valentine-less people irritated by the fact that seemingly everyone else is celebrating being (or hoping to be) in love, here are a few decidedly cranky – in some cases downright scary – vintage Valentine's cards to make you grateful not to be on some people's romantic mailing list!

This one moves...

...though you might wish it didn't!

And one for the lads...

Some of these cards are quite old (the hippo, the pig and the heart-eating monkey) others, I have learned, are from a later period as 'Anonymous' intriguingly reveals in the comments below.

Anon's entertaining reminiscence was accompanied by a link to one of his favourite Valentine's Day cards, featuring a couple of Disney characters, and (to save you having to copy and paste the link), I've 'madly' decided to add here for everyone's amusement...

These cards come from various sites on the net, including The Mitch O'Connell Blog where you will find a great many more!

LOVE TO SOON

The lyrics of a P J Harvey song run:

And love too soon
Can fade away
Love too soon
Can fail away.

But the question is: how soon is too soon?

Well, the first week in November (before even the earliest Christmas lights have twinkled on) is, to my mind, certainly too soon – in fact way, WAY too soon – to find yourself listening to Classic FM and being subjected to advertisements for a VALENTINE'S DAY concert!

AN AFFAIR OF THE HEART

VALENTINE'S DAY
so today's post has to be about...

LOVE

Here's a series of early Sibley drawings – shortly after I discovered felt-tip pens! – giving a unusual take on a well-known vow!

YOU and YOUR
TEDDY BEAR

Will you LOVE

HONOUR and OBEY

For BETTER for WORSE

For RICHER for POORER

In SICKNESS and in HEALTH

As LONG as
YOU BOTH
SHALL LIVE?

"I WILL!"

May your VALENTINES be always TRUE..

...and if you don't have a VALENTINE today
then I'm sending a You-shaped share of My Love!

VENICE LOVERS

To mark the day held dear by lovers and blessed by St Valentine, here are some couples whom we have encountered (through the camera lens) while in Venice...

Young Venetians

Afternoon Tea

Intimacy

Lazing

Smile

Lost

Kiss

Rain-watching IV

Stroll

Doubtful Doges

Today is a day to share love:
so, to everyone,

whether you have (or haven't) a lover,
whether you are in (or out) of love;
and especially to
my very own
Valentine...

BIG HEARTS - SMALL PARTS

Someone's Valentine card---

---had the following, curious, warning on the back...

Well, at three years old, what can you expect?!

SPECIALITIE DE LA MAISON

Fame at last! And in the delightful sphere of gastronomy: after 'Eggs Bendict', 'Omelette Arnold Bennett', 'Peach Melba' and 'Pavlova' comes a new culinary curiosity...

Regular Sibley-blogger, SUZANNE, explains...
I visited Geraardsbergen last week - a Flemish town not far from where I live, known, amongst other things, for its own 'Manneken Pis' (as opposed to the one in Brussels).

When we went for lunch, they had a special St Valentine's Day menu and I thought for a moment they had a new kind of wine - 'Château Brian'? But apparently this is Flemish for some kind of steak!!

Well done
, Suzanne, especially since such menu items are, I'm told, quite rare!

THE RISING COST OF LOVING

In case you've forgotten, today is...

St Valentine's Day

However, if you baulk at the astronomical increase in flower prices every February 14th or can't afford a really nice box of chocs for the One You Love, then worry not, because there are cheaper ways of expressing your affection...

And, if you simply want to give a token - but one that the recipient is unlikely to forget - then what could be better than... well... say... a jar of MARMITE... with... er... CHAMPAGNE?

Meanwhile, Valentine Day Love to...

MYMATE!
