PARTENZIA DI VENEZIA

Henry James advised the visitor to Venice: "When you have called for the bill to go, pay it and remain, and you will find on the morrow that you are deeply attached to Venice."

A nice idea, but, alas, not very practical!

So, farewells - sad and fond - have to be taken...

Farewell Venezia

But in leaving, it's impossible not to share the feelings of Ezra Pound...

Ne'er felt I parting from a woman loved
As feel I now my going forth from thee,
Yea, all thy waters cry out 'Stay with me!'
And laugh reflected flames up luringly

  3. When the Sibley-Weeks's return from Venice then Christmas is truly over :-( I fear not much of a welcome awaits your return as the UK seems to be in the grip of a never-ending ice age ! At least we have our memories to keep us warm :-)
SCREP : That bit of plastic in our car all year round that finally comes into its own to clear snow off the windscreen.

  4. Just made it back to Blighty before Gatwick closed! Drove home through a driving blizzard and am now going into hibernation mode - necessary in a cold drafty flat with no central heating!

The 'giant pants', ELLIOT, are wooden stanchions that mark out the negotiable waterways across the lagoon from the mainland to the island.

  5. Though Ezra Pound, in a sense, never did leave Venice as his remains, remain ~ as it were . . .

  6. That's true, DAVID and we've seen the spot where they 'remain'. No such privileges for the rest of us, I fear. You'll have to chuck my ashes off the back of a vaporetto as it chugs towards (or away from) Santa Maria dell Giglio!

  7. ELLIOT - PS: I keep asking myself: "Why would Elliot suppose I would be showing PANTS of any description on this blog???"
