Overheard in the breakfast room of the Electra Palace Hotel, Athens:
1st American: So what are you guys planning for today?
2nd American: First thing I'm going to do is find a Starbucks and get myself an large Americano!
And I'm sure he did just that, here...
Then, no doubt, he tracked down the Athens branch of MacDonald's - which, happily, I forgot to photograph.
So, hold the Greek Salad and the café Hellenico, please: we're tourists!

How (unfortunately) typical!
I'm unhappy to say that the British can be equally as crass - or worse. We were sitting outside a little cafe-bar when a archetypal seaside-postcard tourist rolled up (red as a lobster in a tiny singlet and shorts) and bellowed at one of the waiters: "HEY, WHERE ARE THE LAVATORIES AROUND HERE?"
I like to go abroad and sample all the local specialities and see the sights but sometimes, just sometimes, I just want to have a simple coffee or get something quick to eat and get on with going out and doing stuff.I never touch a McDonalds because the food is muck but is it really such a crime for the otpions to co-exist side by side ? Sometimes in more distant places, its nice not to have to think about what you eat for once - especially if you have veggies in the family.
Being an Athenian, I have seen that a lot! I do not want to judge people. I would be more interested to know if traveling really affects this kind of tourists. When I travel, I do it out of intellectual curiosity and a need to broaden up my mind.
Now now- not all Americans are the same. Generalizations can be dangerous dear!
Loved it though and it made me laugh out loud. I do find myself cringing quite often at the things I hear in Italy every summer from my own countrymen.
Of course you aren't all like that! And I LOVE America and Americans - yourself included! Although why you never get in touch with me when you come to London, I don't know! Naughty boy! Consider yourself SLAPPED! Next time you and Jared are in town CALL!!!
