VENETIAN WHITE

We finally went to bed at around 3.00 am, after walking about for a couple of hours through a maelstrom of swirling snowflakes - of a size I don't remember seeing since childhood days in rural Kent.

The sudden, magical, transformation of the city - which we have seen in other people's photographs but never in person - is fantastic!

This morning we were up at first light and out with the cameras before as always happens when it snows in Venice (or so locals tell us) the white frosting vanishes almost as swiftly as it arrived.

So, here's a selection of photographs of the last our first snow in Venice...

The change in the weather has required buttons to revise his new year greeting!

I especially like the last two pics.
Up till 3am - I'd be wrecked for a week if I did that. As it is I stayed up till the end of the Jools Holland Hootenanny (a great feast of music) and am feeling decidedly dosey today.
Affism: Something us Scots would use after too little sleep - 'I'm feeling a bit aff today'.

You are so lucky getting snow ! In Nottingham yesterday there was a bad frost but with fog so thick it made taking pictures difficult.
MARNE : A speck of dust photographed very close to the lens and illuminated by flash which is shown over the top of someone's head in what would, otherwise, have been a really good picture. If you're the type of person who thinks 'Most Haunted'is a documentary, you may also know a Marne as a supernatural Orb.

The photos of Venice dressed in white are beautiful. It must have made for a wonderful way to start the New Year. I wish you all the best for 2009.

How lucky we were! :-)

And apologies, LISAH, but I've added a couple more photos and altered the order so I think your choice is now the first and the last-but-one!!

How strange it is to see somewhere I associate with heat & sunshine covered with snow! Aren't you lucky!
unphin: the way I felt at my new year's party (old & badly dressed next to all the young sylphs dressed in little black numbers with oodles of flesh revealed!)

Yes, lucky indeed! For the past 12 years, I've longed to see snow and now I have! A simple enough desire but, in Venice, not easily achieved...

This visit - with my severely reduced mobility - has begun to feel like my last excursion to the boudoir of La Serenissima; but if it is, then I have, at least, seen her dressed in a style in which I've long hoped to see her...
