WET UNDERFOOT

The 1940s American humorist Robert Benchley famously telegramed his New York editor on arriving in Venice: "Streets flooded. Please advise."

Arriving in London recently (from Venice) it was tempting to parody Benchley and ask: "Streets blocked with noisy, smelly, carbon-emitting, four-by-four vehicles. Please advise..."
