THE YEAR OF THE...?

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!

Yes, it's the Year of the Goat...

Or, maybe (apparently), the Sheep...

Or, possibly, the Ram!

Oh, well, something with horns, anyway...

RING IN THE NEW

This illustration of tree branches making up the words, “Happy New Year” was published in 1876 by Currier and Ives. The black and white lithograph was then hand-coloured by a series of Currier and Ives production artists, each artist colouring one item or items receiving the same colour.

The popularity of Currier and Ives prints depicting Christmas and winter themes was immortalised in a line in the lyrics of the seasonal song, 'Sleigh Ride':
There's a happy feeling
Nothing in the world can buy,
When they pass around the chocolate
And the pumpkin pie
It'll nearly be like a picture print
By Currier and Ives
These wonderful things are the things
We remember all through our lives!
You can read more about Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives here and here.

ONE DAY AT A TIME

Just before Christmas, I wrote about the Disney studio's plans for a projected Fantasia 2006 which was to have included the sequence featuring Hans Christian Andersen's story of The Little Match Girl.

The comments to that post noted the other planned sequences for the film, but in case you missed that exchange, here is one of them, appropriately enough, One by One, performed by LeboM.

The lyrics begin...

"Ibabeni njalo bakithi, Ninga Dinwa..."
"Hold on tight my people, don't get weary..."

At what is still the beginning of a New Year, this little film is filled with things we can all do with just now: sun, warmth, laughter - and hope!

...and may whatever you wish yourself
be yours in 2011

You can read a translation of the lyrics to One by One here.

And here is the finale of the firework display, just after midnight, over the Venice lagoon marking Capodanno 2011 - the first day of the new year...

RING OUT THE OLD... RING IN THE NEW...

Ring Out, Wild Bells

Ring
out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light;

The year is dying in the night;

Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:

The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see no more,

Ring out the feud of rich and poor,

Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;

Ring in the nobler modes of life,

With sweeter manners, purer laws.

Ring out the want, the care the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;

Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes,

But ring the fuller minstrel in.

Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;

Ring in the love of truth and right,

Ring in the common love of good.

Ring out old shapes of foul disease,
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;

Ring out the thousand wars of old,

Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;

Ring out the darkness of the land,

Ring in the Christ that is to be.

- from In Memoriam A H H by Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1849)

And here's part of Tennyson's poem set to music by Victor and Kaprena Worth...

Like many others, we face 2010 with some apprehension and not a little anxiety. There are concerns about work and health and, above all, for David and I, where we will be living next year...

But all any of us can do is put our trust and faith in hopes for a better resolution to our problems than our fears lead us to expect.

Which is why I wish you, most sincerely---

A HAPPY & HEALTHY
and, above all, HOPEFUL
NEW YEAR!

VENETIAN WHITE

We finally went to bed at around 3.00 am, after walking about for a couple of hours through a maelstrom of swirling snowflakes - of a size I don't remember seeing since childhood days in rural Kent.

The sudden, magical, transformation of the city - which we have seen in other people's photographs but never in person - is fantastic!

This morning we were up at first light and out with the cameras before as always happens when it snows in Venice (or so locals tell us) the white frosting vanishes almost as swiftly as it arrived.

So, here's a selection of photographs of the last our first snow in Venice...

The change in the weather has required buttons to revise his new year greeting!

RING IN THE NEW!

Wishing you all a very
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Or, as they say here---

BUON ANNO

David and I hope that your 2009 goes with a---

B A N G !

And if the fuse is being a little slow to light, then here's part of a New Year firework display in Venice from a couple of years ago to add a little celebratory spark...*

We wish you whatever you most wish yourself for the forthcoming 365 days but, above all, we wish you health, work, peace and happiness...

* Last Night's fireworks were accompanied by a snowstorm! We've spent eleven winters in Venice and - at long last - we have seen what the Venetians refer to as "rare snow"...

Very slippery, but bliss!

Oh, and by the way, buttons would like to offer his own particular new year greeting.
