GINGERBREAD HOUSE DAY

December 12th:

HAPPY GINGERBREAD HOUSE DAY!

Illustration: Kay Nielsen (18886-1957) from Hansel and Gretel and Other Stories by the Brothers Grimm (1925)

The tradition of making decorated edible houses  from gingerbread began in Germany in the early 1800s, allegedly popularised following the publication, in 1812,  the dark fairy-tale of Hansel and Gretel as told by the Brothers Grimm. In the tale, the abandoned children, lost in a wood, discover original the house "built of bread, and roofed with cakes, and the window was of transparent sugar.”  In later tellings, the bread became gingerbread inspiring German bakers to craft small decorated edible houses from lebkuchen, the popular spiced honey biscuits.

"...It was now three mornings since Hansel and Gretel had left their father's house. They began to walk again, but they always came deeper into the forest, and if help did not come soon, they must die of hunger and weariness. When it was mid-day, they saw a beautiful snow-white bird sitting on a bough, which sang so delightfully that they stood still and listened to it. And when its song was over, it spread its wings and flew away before them, and they followed it until they reached a little house, on the roof of which it alighted; and when they approached the little house they saw that it was built of bread and covered with cakes, but that the windows were of clear sugar. 'We will set to work on that,' said Hansel, 'and have a good meal. I will eat a bit of the roof, and you Gretel, can eat some of the window, it will taste sweet.' Hansel reached up above, and broke off a little of the roof to try how it tasted, and Gretel leant against the window and nibbled at the panes. Then a soft voice cried from the parlour:

'Nibble, nibble, gnaw,
Who is nibbling at my little house?'

The children answered:

'The wind, the wind,
The heaven-born wind,'

and went on eating without disturbing themselves. Hansel, who liked the taste of the roof, tore down a great piece of it, and Gretel pushed out the whole of one round window-pane, sat down, and enjoyed herself with it. Suddenly the door opened, and a woman as old as the hills, who supported herself on crutches, came creeping out. Hansel and Gretel were so terribly frightened that they let fall what they had in their hands. The old woman, however, nodded her head, and said: 'Oh, you dear children, who has brought you here? do come in, and stay with me. No harm shall happen to you.' She took them both by the hand, and led them into her little house. Then good food was set before them, milk and pancakes, with sugar, apples, and nuts. Afterwards two pretty little beds were covered with clean white linen, and Hansel and Gretel lay down in them, and thought they were in heaven."

CITY OF TEMPTATIONS

For a chap who's generally fore-sworn treats, Venice at Christmas –– pretty much any time of the year, but especially at Christmas –– is trap for the unwary dieter!

So, I will just have to take photos and enjoy vicariously!

CLOCKING-ON

David and I first came to Venice in 1998 and from that year until our visit in 2006 we never saw one of the city's most celebrated landmarks: the Torre dell'Orologio, the ornately decorated Renaissance clock tower that stands on the north side of the Piazza San Marco.

Built in the 15th Century, the tower features a carving of the Lion of Saint Mark, a statue of the Madonna and Christ Child, a vast clock face marking 24 (not 12) hours, the moon phases and the houses of the zodiac and is surmounted by a huge bell on which the hours are struck by two hammer-wielding Moors scantily clad in animal skins.

For the first eight years of our visiting Venice, the clock was under wraps for restoration and we saw this extraordinary edifice for the first time in 2006 when the scaffolding finally came down. But it was a couple of years later that we got to witness a special feature of the clock that is only ever seen twice a year...

During Ascension Week and on the Feast of Epiphany – today – the panels to the right and left of the central statue, which normally display the hour and minutes in Roman numerals on giant revolving drums, are removed and replaced with doors that, every hour (from 9:00-5:00) open onto the balcony allowing elaborate automata figures of a trumpet-tooting Angel and the gift-bearing Magi to process before the Virgin and Child, tipping their crowns as they pass.

Here they are in action at 1:00 pm today...

The performance today went a good deal smoother than our first memory of clock-watching in 2008... It was raining at 9 o'clock when the Wise Men and their Angelic Companion made their debut appearance and apart from a lot of bedraggled pigeons and a handful of disinterested caribinari, David and I were the only witnesses to the event; which, as you will see from our video that day, is probably just as well!

Today is a public holiday and here in Venice, as in all Italy, Epiphany is still commemorated and is a vital part of the celebrations (at least as far as the children are concerned) since it is the day signalling the arrival  La Befana – a female counterpart of those Santa Claus/Father Christmas/St Nicholas characters who feature in the Northern European and American Christmas festivities...

An old woman riding a broomstick through the air at night, La Befana, wears a black shawl and carries a sack of sweets and gifts which she leaves in the stockings that the children hang up for her. She is covered in soot because – like Santa – she enters the children's houses via the chimney.

Children who have not been good during the year, receive (instead of sweets) bags of ashes or a lump of coal – nowadays, black sugar-candy!

Because she's a good housekeeper, Befana always uses her broom to sweep the floor before leaving. It is polite to leaves out a small glass of wine for La Befana, together with something to eat - just as Santa gets all those glasses of milk and mince pies...

One Christian legend (similar to the Russian tale of Babushka) tells how La Befana was visited by the three Wise Men, seeking directions as to where Jesus had been born. The old woman did not know, but – being a homely, house-proud soul – she gave the travellers shelter for the night.

The following day, the Wise Men invited La Befana to join them on their quest, but she refused saying that she was far too busy with her housework. Then, too late, she charged her mind and went off in search the the Wise Men and the Christ Child, but was unable to find them. So it was that – to this very day – La Befana is searching for them still and, on her travels, leaves toys and candy for all the good children she finds.

Italian children are warned that if they ever see La Befana they'll receive a thwack from her broomstick: a typical adult ruse to keep youngsters in their beds on Epiphany Eve while parents are distributing sweets – or coal – and sweeping the floor.

To mark Epiphany – and the arrival of La Befana – a regatta is held in Venice every 6 January, with veteran gondoliers (in witchy drag), rowing up the Grand Canal to a finishing line at the Rialto Bridge.

Traffic on the Grand Canal comes to a halt and everyone crowds the fondamenta on either side of the Canal. A giant stocking hangs down from the bridge to mark the winning post and great excitement attends the race and the presentation of the special Befana-emblazoned pennants (left) that are the prizes while everyone – especially (right)  little old Italian ladies – get on with the really serious business of enjoying hot chocolate, mulled wine and sweet flaky biscuits called (in the Venetian dialect) galani...

THE "M"PIRE STRIKES BLACK

It was news to me, despite being a reasonably-informed chocoholic: I somehow missed the fact that M&Ms have started making dark-chocy versions of their famous sweets: hence my puzzlement at receiving this 'date-sensitive' e-mail...

Fortunately, thanks to YouTube, I was able to track down this vintage (2007) cinema commercial that explains (sort of) M&M's defection to the 'Dark Side'!

It's quite a fad it seems...

When I left you, I was but the learner,
now I am the master... So pass the M&Ms!

Have you ever wondered what they do with the bits of Polo that get removed when they make the holes?

The answer: they sell them to the Italians...

FUDGING THE ISSUE

On a recent visit to Salisbury, Sheila and Roger picked up this edible souvenir: a 'Clotted Cream Flavour Fudge Bar' which comes 'as recommended by WOLFIE the Salisbury Cathedral Cat' who is engagingly featured on the wrapper...

BUT...

On the back of said wrapper we read:

That being so, how much confidence can we place in the recommendation of Wolfie?

Or has Wolfie already passed on to a more celestial abode as a result of excessive fudge consumption?!

Joking apart, after a little research, I discovered the following:
Although domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus) possess an otherwise functional sense of taste, they, unlike most mammals, do not prefer and may be unable to detect the sweetness of sugars. One possible explanation for this behavior is that cats lack the sensory system to taste sugars and therefore are indifferent to them.

AAAAAAAAARGH!

Avast and belay, ye swabs! You'll forgive the Robert Newton vernacular, me hearties, but I'm currently writing a book about the making of Aardman's The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists – or, as they be calling it in our former colony on the other side of the Atlantic, The Pirates! Band of Misfits.

It be hungry work, scribing, and tiring of the usual ration of ship's biscuits (them weevils be so indigestible, even when dunked in ye finest rum) I have decided that I needs a few of these little beauties to chomp on while scratching away with me quill...

Ye'll find other unusual edibles at Ye Unemployed Philosophers Guild.

And listen up, ye cursed land-lubbers, if so be it ye have not yet seen The Pirates! then be sure to catch it while you can or face the wrath of the Pirate Captain and a watery assignation with Davey Jones...

MINT CONDITION

One of the weirdest thing about moving is that it turns into something of an excavation: you dig into the dark recesses of drawers and cupboards (undisturbed since Pre-Jurassic times) and you find forgotten things – sometimes, things of which have no memory whatsoever!

One such recent discovery for us was this unopened bar of Kendal Mint Cake which David purchased in the Lake District some years ago...

How many years ago? Well, if the last entry on legend of the back of the wrapper listing the expeditions that have taken KMC with them is anything to go by...

...it was probably purchased 33 years ago!

I decided to seek advice as to its edibleness from leading KMC makers, Romney's of Kendal. Their Managing Director, John Barron, quickly and helpfully replied:
Hello Brian,

We are amazed that you have an unopened bar of our Mint Cake from 1979 in your possesion!

If it is one of our George Romney Ltd or Wipers bars, please send it to us and we will gladly replace it with a new one that you can enjoy.
Unfortunately, we couldn't take them up on this offer since (as you can see from pack) David's KMC was not a Romney's product, but was manufactured by one of their rivals, Quiggins. So, I contacted their website and their man, Stuart, responded:
As Mint Cake is nearly all sugar it will be edible. I would not recommend eating it myself and imagine it will be just like rock and therefore good for nothing apart from breaking your teeth!!!

The local antique shop might be the best bet or even eBay!!
Tempting as it is to see if it will (pardon the upcoming pun) make a mint in the second-hand marketplace, we've decided to hang on to it for future emergencies – such as the stresses yet to be undergone during the eventual move back into our old flat!

OPENING CEREMONY

The curious thing about moving house is that you come across stuff you haven't seen for years...

Though no longer new, it had to be opened!

Is this a cue for old schoolboy joke about Martin Luther? Perhaps not...

EGGSCESSIVENESS!

A seasonal offering from Zoeycakes ('little cakes. big taste'): take one Cadbury's creme egg and bake inside a chocolate cupcake, top off with vanilla butter-cream and a Cadbury's mini-egg...

Creme Egg Cupcake

Serve, eat and...

Inside of Creme Egg Cupcake

...prepare to be very ill!

Incidentally, as in the photo above, why does a cupcake (or a muffin) always look so much less attractive when its paper case has been peeled off? Rather like a stripper that doesn't quite have the body imagination had led one to expect...

You can find more photos of heart attacks on Zoeycakes flickr photostream and on their www.zoeycakes.com.

EAT ME (2), TOO!

Another EAT ME invitation from Wonderland...

Enchantmints!

Lover of puns though Lewis Carroll was, I doubt that his alter ego, the Reverend C L Dodgson, would have have been too amused by another punning product from the same manufacturer – even if the contents are the perfect solution to over-indulging in EAT MEs!

ASKING SWEETLY

Talking of Lewis Carroll: while in Oxford the other day to celebrate the birthday of the discoverer of Wonderland and Looking-glass World, we came across these...

Eat Me!

...although I am puzzled why the Wonderland authorities would mint commemorative coins featuring someone whose visit caused so much upheaval and trauma to everyone from rabbits to royalty!

Anyway, if you'll excuse me, I need to comply with the inscription!

SWEET THOUGHTS

I love Venice sweet shops!

This visit we stumbled across a new, and very superior, cioccolateria, in the San Polo sestiere of the city. There was a lot of polished copper and delicious aromas but, with each chocolate costing almost €2 apiece, relatively little chance of over-indulging!

Cioccolateria I

Truffles

Cioccolateria II
Not quite so posh, but perhaps more honest and certainly irresistible to any passer-by with an even faintly sweet-tooth, are the everyday sweet shops that are in evidence all over Venice.

Now, these really are sweet shops!

Instead of the serried rows of chocolates, there is a pleasing jumble of bowls filled to overflowing with brightly-coloured or brilliantly-wrapped sweets of all kinds and sorts.

These are the kind of establishments that you imagine from memories of childhood fiction. Of course, outside of picture book illustrations and fanciful jigsaw paintings, I doubt if such shops ever existed in Britain, but they most certainly ought to have done, because they are exactly the kind of places where one imagines William Brown, Billy Bunter and Jennings and Derbyshire would have gone to stock-up on essential sweet supplies.

They are positively Dickensian in their joyful appearance and riotously opulent excessiveness and could easily have provided the inspiration for the confectionery business overseen by Mr Willy Wonka or, more recently, for Honeydukes sweetshop in J K Rowling's Hogsmeade village.

Without a doubt, we would all be a good deal happier (though undeniably fatter) if we all had a branch at the end of our street!

KREEPY KIDS

Funny how advertising images from the past linger in the memory. For example, that kid with his scrubbed-shiny face and 'fifties hair cut with a mouthful of Rowntree's Fruit Gums and and a mischievous twinkle in the eyes.

He was the kind of boy who'd hang out with (Just) William Brown or go to the same school as Jennings and Derbyshire and, in the school holidays, would get involved in some prankish exploit such as we read about, when young, in books like The Otterbury Incident or saw in films like Hue and Cry. He was - to those of a certain age - one of us!

Not so some very creepy kids that Irascian came across on the net the other week on a site devoted to period (and therefore 'strange') advertisements.

Take this young man with teeth that suggest he might just be the young Hannibal Lecter...

What is he eating? And is it still alive? If it's not, then why is it struggling to get off the fork? And are those bread sticks on the table beside him or sausages... or what??

As for this young lady, I can't help feeling she probably oughtn't to be fed too much red - orf even pink - meat...

While, scariest of all, is this young miss whose rapture at seeing all that red stuff (which may only be jam although, personally, I doubt it!) would suggest the imminent need to send for an exorcist!

A lingering question remains: did these commercial children actually sell any of the products they were advertising. I have to say, I doubt it - unless, of course, those products were birth control aids!

ODDMINTS

After those various mint selections offered by The Unemployed Philosophers Guild (see here, here and here), I have now discovered - from a different source - some extreme oddities, such as...

COMMIE MINTS

"Revolutionize your breath just like Lenin and the Bolsheviks revolutionized Mother Russia!"

GARLIC MINTS

"Each gothicly-styled tin contains one hundred mints guaranteed to give you the kind of garlic breath that will send vampires scurrying back to their coffins. Warning: consistent use of Garlic Mints may have a negative impact on your social life."

BITE-THE-BULLET MINTS

"Keep a tin of these Bite the Bullet Mints in your holster and you’ll have the freshest breath in the West!"

DEATH MINTS

"Each collectible, coffin-shaped tin contains one hundred potent mints that will leave you with fresh breath to die for!"

MONKEY [Banana-Flavoured] MINTS

"If the simple grin on this monkey tin isn't enough to cheer you up, the delicious banana mints inside should do the trick. Whether you're monkeying around at home, or going bananas at work, a smiling tin of Monkey Mints will surely turn that frown upside down."

BACON MINTS

"Each one of these mints tastes like a delicious slice of crispy bacon with just a hint of mint flavor to give it that extra punch!"

After which you may wish to avail yourself of some...

BACON FLAVOURED TOOTHPICKS

"Whether you yearn to eliminate unsightly debris from those hard-to-reach spaces between your teeth or you crave a splash of bacon zest to spice up a boring oral hygiene routine, these bacon-flavored toothpicks are for you. Arm yourself with invigorating pig freshness and the confidence that you can take on the world. The next time you pig out, you'll be glad you have these flavorful slender sticks of wood by your side."

And for something altogether different...

BUBBLE GUM CIGARETTES

"Satisfy your oral fixation with these classic Bubble Gum Cigarettes. We're pretty sure that the Surgeon General will have no problem with you chewing a pack a day!"

MARIE ANTOINETTE HEAD LOLLIPOPS

"Once you get over the initial reluctance to put a human head in your mouth, you'll find that the subtle contours and cherry flavor of these Marie Antoinette Head Lollipops are worth the strange looks you'll get as you suck them."

"Let then suck lollipops!" I say.

And seriously YUCK...

GUMMY HEART

"Express your deep love and devotion in a creepy and disturbing way with a Gummy Heart. Each 4" tall, 80 gram piece of strawberry flavored gummy candy is realistically detailed to look just like a human heart! The package features a charming little rhyme: 'My love is pure, my love is true, you can have my heart and eat it too!'"

All these - and unbelievably more! - are available from Archie McPhee, 'Horrifying the World for Twenty-Five Years'.

Lastly, my personal favourite...

...because, of course, Nihilists don’t believe in flavour!
